Food packaging printing in Italy
How to specify food packaging printing in Italy: what to tell a producer about the food, which documentation to ask for, and who decides compliance.
Food packaging is a compliance product that happens to be printed. The press work is the straightforward part; what determines whether the packaging is usable is the food it holds, how long it holds it, what the inks are, and what documentation comes with the delivery.
Italy has a large food packaging converting base, so you will get offers. The ones worth comparing are from producers who asked you about the food before quoting — and you can prompt that by putting it in the specification yourself.
What to put in the specification
An RfQ carries one specification field, and this is what belongs in it for food packaging. Anything left out is something each producer assumes differently — which is why offers stop being comparable.
- What the food is
- Name it. Dry, fatty, moist and acidic foods behave differently against a substrate, and the answer changes both material and ink choices.
- Direct contact or not
- Whether the printed pack touches the food, or only an inner bag or sealed tray. This is the single most consequential line in the specification.
- Shelf life and storage
- How long the food must keep and at what temperature — ambient, chilled, frozen. Barrier requirements follow from this.
- Filling conditions
- Filling temperature, whether the pack is filled by hand or on a line, and the line speed. Hot filling and high-speed lines both constrain the material.
- Format and construction
- Carton, wrap, bag, sleeve, tray lid; with a dieline or a sample if one exists. Give internal dimensions, not just outside ones.
- Substrate and barrier
- Board grade in gsm, or film structure, plus any barrier or coating needed for grease, moisture or oxygen.
- Inks and varnishes
- Ask what ink system the producer uses for food packaging and whether low-migration inks are standard or an upgrade. Do not assume; ask them to state it in the offer.
- Sealing
- Heat seal, cold seal, glue, or none. Note that some finishes interfere with sealing and adhesion, so name the finish and the seal together.
- Selling market
- Where the packaged food is sold. Compliance follows the market it is sold into, not the country it was printed in.
- Documentation
- Ask explicitly what is supplied: a declaration of compliance, material specifications, migration test data. Ask for it in the offer, not after delivery.
- Quantity and run-on price
- Two or three quantities and the run-on, since tooling and plates dominate a short run.

Ask for the declaration of compliance up front
It is a document, and a producer who works in food packaging will have a process for issuing it. Asking during quoting tells you whether you are dealing with one who does.
Ask which ink system the price assumes
Ink choice for food packaging is a specification item with a cost. An offer that does not say which inks it is based on is not comparable with one that does.
Compliance follows the market, not the press
Printing in Italy does not by itself make packaging compliant anywhere. Name the market the food is sold into and ask what the producer provides for it; where the rules are moving, the PPWR article below is the place to start.
Four ways this goes wrong
Not naming the food
Say what it is, how fatty or moist, and how long it must keep. Every material decision downstream depends on it.
Assuming standard inks are fine
Ask what the offer is based on and require the answer in writing. This is the question that separates a food packaging producer from a general printer.
Leaving documentation until after award
List what you expect in the RfQ. Documentation you have to chase after delivery is documentation you may not get.
Ignoring the filling line
State filling temperature, method and speed. A pack that is perfect on the bench can fail at line speed.
Frequently asked questions
What documentation should I ask a food packaging producer for?
At minimum a declaration of compliance for the materials as supplied, the material specifications, and any migration test data relevant to your food and contact conditions. Ask for it in the offer so it is part of what you are comparing.
Are standard printing inks suitable for food packaging?
Not automatically — it depends on the pack construction and whether there is direct contact. Ask the producer which ink system the quote assumes and whether low-migration inks are standard or priced separately.
Who is legally responsible for the packaging?
The party placing the packaged food on the market carries the obligation, while the producer holds much of the supporting evidence. That is why the documentation question belongs in the RfQ rather than in a later conversation.
Does printing in Italy make my packaging EU compliant?
No. Compliance follows the market the packaged food is sold into and the evidence held for the materials used. Name that market in the specification and ask the producer what they supply for it.
Put this specification in front of producers
Publishing an RfQ is free, and producers bid without seeing each other’s offers. Pick Food Packaging as the product type and Italy as the delivery country if that is where it is going.
Create an RfQDo you make food packaging in Italy?
Producers list what they make and which countries they serve, and are matched to requests that fit. Listing is free and bidding costs nothing.
